Are you feeling stuck, in transition, or in need of making a change?
Counseling can help you through a hard time.
Sometimes we need someone outside of our circle of friends, family, or romantic relationships to help us make changes in our lives. All of us have struggles, unfortunately this is part of the human condition, and no one is immune. Many people struggle with mental illnesses, in addition to life's struggles. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 1 in 5 individuals have a mental illness, but only about half seek treatment (NIMH, 2016). Seeking help through counseling, and/or treatment by a medical professional can improve the lives of people struggling with mental health concerns.
How can counseling help?
Counselors are trained to help understand and treat a variety of mental illnesses through talk therapy and a variety of interventions. You work on things in the counseling relationship that may be keeping you from living the most fulfilling life possible. My goal is to help you heal from emotional struggles and traumatic experiences from the past. I can work with you to help you build coping and communication skills to improve relationships. Finally, I can help you understand yourself more deeply, so that you can be equipped with the tools to live a life that makes you feel free and happy.
Is something wrong with me if I have to see a therapist?
No, I believe that anyone can benefit from therapy. We ALL have challenges in life such as break-ups, identity confusion, life direction impasses, challenges with family, and other relational struggles. Lapses in self-esteem, self doubt, and an inability to move forward with confidence or direction are common. Life can throw a constant stream of stress our way, and sometimes just talking through it with a trained professional can be hugely beneficial. It takes great courage and maturity to seek help from a trained professional.
But will counseling actually help?
Counseling can be hugely beneficial for people struggling with a variety of issues. The research is clear on the fact that psychotherapy works. There are positive results from working with a skilled professional. There are no guarantees, and there are many factors that lead to successful therapeutic outcomes, such as your openness to doing the work, personal fit with your therapist, honesty, and choosing the right therapist. Here is a link to a great article on the effectiveness of therapy, with a list of references at the bottom of the article. http://counsellingresource.com/lib/therapy/types/effectiveness/
How do I know if you are the right counselor for me?
Give me a call, and see if I seem like a good fit! I am a Ph.D. level, Licensed Professional Counselor with experience in a wide variety of human problems. I have 8 years of formal education on psychology, human development and relationship issues. If I am not a good fit for you, I am bound by my code of ethics to refer you to someone else. I take my passion for helping others seriously, and I won't work with you if I don't have the tools to meet your needs. I will however, try to help you find the level of care necessary to help you.
My specialties include work with: young adults, adolescents, mental health diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder etc., LGBTQ+ specific concerns, transgender identity exploration, infidelity, and relationship issues. I listen to your concerns and help you reach goals based on your needs.
